Defining vocal improvement and mastery of the voice

Developing your voice is a process of improving both technical and musical skills required to make the best vocal sound you are capable of.

The technical and musical skills required for mastering the voice are-

  1. Having your entire vocal range unlocked and smoothing out your vocal breaks
  2. Having a great vocal tone you are satisfied with
  3. Having a strong falsetto sound
  4. The ability to use expressive techniques such as riffs and runs, distortion, vocal swells (etc.)
  5. The ability to sing with endurance for long periods of time
  6. A great sense of pitch, rhythm and style
  7. Having consistency and freedom in the voice while doing all of the above!

How long does it take to improve your singing voice?

The length of time it takes to improve your singing voice is entirely dependent on how far along you are already in your journey. Referring to the numbered points above describing the aspects of vocal mastery, you can ask yourself 'how much of this list have I already achieved?'

The issue with this question is that the answer is different for every singer who is reading this. If you are a singer who already has a strong voice with your entire range unlocked then you are closer to mastery of your voice. However if you are a singer who struggles with singing off-pitch and your voice is often very weak sounding, that will add more time to your mastery process than another person who doesn't struggle with that issue.

Provided the material you are practicing with is correct, you should be looking at one or two years of consistent practice to make some serious vocal progress. This progress will be enough for you to be able to unlock your range, improve your tone and be able to sing songs that you wouldn't have been able to sing before you started training. After around the five year mark of training the voice with correct information you should develop into quite an advanced singer by this time. I expand more on this idea of a five year benchmark in the video lesson above.

How do you improve your singing voice efficiently?

The most efficient way to improve your singing voice is to do regular lessons with a great vocal teacher either in-person or online through Skype. Using well-made vocal courses are also useful as long as they are designed to correct your own unique and personal vocal issues.

I learned how to sing by doing online Skype lessons with my teacher Phil Moufarrege. One of the most beneficial things for me having a teacher was not only the lessons themselves but also the ability to ask my teacher his thoughts on different vocal methods, different ideas about the voice and different bits of information I found online and in books. This was very valuable to me as I was able to more accurately use the information which was solid and ignore any information that wasn't going to help me progress.

It is really true that if you do not follow the correct the vocal advice that your voice needs you could potentially waste years not making much vocal progress. With that being the case I believe it's best to find a teacher you can trust. I personally offer Skype lessons which you can purchase directly here on my website.

The voice is capable of endless improvement

The last thing we will be discussing is that the voice is capable of endless progress and improvement. Even if you develop your voice for 20 or 30 years you can still develop more and more intricacies in your sound and explore more expressive ways of producing your own unique sound. You can always develop more consistency in the voice as well, mastering the ability to sing difficult songs day after day and maintaining good technique.

Conclusion

The amount of time it takes to develop your voice is dependent on how developed you already are as a singer. Provided that you have the correct training for your voice from a good teacher or a good vocal course, you should begin to make very substantial progress after one or two years of consistent lessons and practice. After around five years of practicing regularly you should begin to become quite advanced as a singer. Ultimately there is no limit to how competent you can become as a singer as the voice is capable of endless improvement.
