The 3 Most Common Singing Mistakes Female Singers Make

1. Not being able to comfortably sing in your low range

As a singer you should know what the most comfortable low notes are that you can use when singing songs or singing scales. Since everybody’s starting vocal range is different this will be unique to you, which is why you need to learn to find the low note yourself or with the help of a teacher. Inside the video lesson I have linked above I have provided a vocal exercise in order for you to identify your starting pitch.

Being able to sing well in your low range also means that you should be able to produce a medium volume sound in order to balance the “foundation” of your voice. The voice actually works in such a way that if your low notes are able to be sung confidently and controlled, the middle of your range and your upper vocal range will likely feel much more secure while also sounding better.

2. Not being able to distinguish falsetto (unconnected) and chest voice (connected) sounds

The female falsetto is quite different when compared to the falsetto sound of a male voice. The female falsetto sounds much closer to chest voice where as with a male singing in falsetto it is a drastically different sound compared to the chest voice.

When developing your singing voice as a female it is very important to feel into & hear the difference between your chest voice and falsetto sounds. In the video lesson at the top of this page I provide examples of female singers singing in falsetto & chest voice in order for you to easily identify the difference. An example of a female singer who often uses falsetto is Billie Eilish, and an example of a singer who uses mostly all chest voice is Hayley Williams of Paramore.

It will be important for you to distinguish between the falsetto and chest voice when trying to learn to sing songs in heavier & louder styles because you will almost definitely need to stay in chest voice in order for your tone to be loud and powerful.

3. Not singing loudly & powerfully enough in order to develop a belted tone

I believe belting is an essential part of being a good singer because without being able to belt loudly you will be very limited in the kind of styles and emotions you can sing with. In order to sing loudly you will need to have different aspects of the voice working properly such as your support, power in your lower and middle range and also an understanding of how to reduce tension in the throat so you do not strain your voice.

I have another article and video dedicated to learning to belt called “How To Belt For Beginners” but first I recommend you check out this video lesson above for “Most Common Singing Mistakes For Female Singers”.
